The Global 100 starts by considering all firms with a market capitalization of at least US$2 billion. These corporations are then screened for factors such as sustainability disclosure practices, financial health, product categories, and financial sanctions. Corporations that pass the screening process constitute the 2017 Global 100 shortlist. Finally, a quantitative methodology that takes into account 14 key-performance indicators (KPIs) is used to determine the final ranking. The KPIs for 2017 included:
- Resource management: energy intensity, carbon intensity, water intensity, waste intensity
- Financial management: innovation capacity, percentage tax paid, CEO-average employee pay, pension fund status
- Employee management: safety performance, employee turnover, leadership diversity, clean capitalism pay link
- Additional KPIs: supplier score, clean air productivity score
